Zero Turn, Zero Time

November 10, 2016

We love our lawns, but we don’t always love the upkeep. When it comes to mowing in the summer heat, most of us would agree that the sooner we finish the job, the better! Have you considered how much time you could be saving with a zero turn mower?

Zero turn mowers have numerous time-saving features, including:

  • Speed — Zero turn mowers are designed to achieve higher speeds than traditional ride-on lawn mowers, and certainly more than a walk-behind mower. Not only does this have the obvious benefit of travelling more ground in less time, it can also help you maintain straight lines for a cleaner cut.
  • Maneuverability — The flexibility and simple operation of a zero turn mower means you can maneuver around trees, flower beds, and other obstacles with ease. The mower can spin 180 degrees on its own axis, so you can easily turn corners or begin the next line without reversing, and mow in a single pass.
  • Finesse — Because you have an unobstructed view of the cutting deck, you can cut close to your lawn edges for a superior finish, often bypassing the need for a brushcutter.

A John Deere EZ-Trak lawn mower has an average mower deck of 42 inches, and an average speed of 11km/hour. Compare this to a walk-behind mower, wherein the average person would travel at 4.5km/hour to push a 21-inch mower.

With an approximate crunch of numbers, we can learn that while it would take nearly two hours for a walk-behind mower to get through one acre of land, a zero-turn could obliterate the area in no more than 30 minutes.

Just imagine what you could do with an extra 90 minutes in your day…

  • Watch half a game of AFL.
  • Eat 12 meat pies.
  • Watch The Castle.
  • Plant 6 new plants in the garden.
  • Enjoy a rejuvenating snooze.
  • Watch 4 episodes of All Aussie Adventures.
  • Barbecue a beer can chicken.
  • Take 1.5 guided tours through Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
  • Burn 500 calories by weeding and raking the yard.
  • Listen to Jimmy Barnes’ Working Class Man 26 times.

Zero turn mowers have many advantages, but it’s important that you choose the mower best suited to your lawn. Keep in mind that mowing technique and the unique properties of your yard will affect your mowing time, and may call for the use of a different type of mower.

If you have a large residential property, if you need to be able to quickly maneuver around obstacles, or if you’re facing massive commercial jobs with tight time constraints, the speed and power of a zero-turn mower could be ideal.
